What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence refers to any pattern of abusive behaviour used to gain or maintain control over a partner in an intimate relationship. It can occur in any type of relationship, regardless of gender, age, or background. Domestic violence includes physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse.
Forms of Domestic Violence
- Physical Abuse: Hitting, slapping, punching, choking, or any other form of physical harm.
- Emotional/Psychological Abuse: Constant criticism, humiliation, isolation from friends and family, or threatening behaviour.
- Sexual Abuse: Any form of coerced or forced sexual activity.
- Financial Abuse: Controlling finances, preventing access to money, or making a partner financially dependent.
- Verbal Abuse: Insulting, belittling, and degrading comments designed to hurt the person’s self-esteem.
Signs of Domestic Violence
- Unexplained injuries or frequent "accidents."
- Isolation from friends, family, or activities.
- Fear of a partner’s reaction or anger.
- Sudden changes in behaviour or personality.
- Constant checking in with a partner, even during school or work.
- A partner who tries to control decisions, finances, or social interactions.
Why is Domestic Violence a Concern?
Domestic violence can have lasting effects on the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of individuals. It can also create an unsafe environment for children and others who may witness the abuse. Everyone deserves to feel safe, loved, and respected, and it's essential to recognise domestic violence as an issue that affects people of all backgrounds.
How to Help
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, it's important to seek help and support. Here are some steps to consider:
- Talk to a Trusted Adult: Reach out to a teacher or parent who can help guide you.
- Contact a Helpline: There are many contacts available 24/7 for those affected by domestic violence.
- Create a Safety Plan: If you are in immediate danger, develop a plan to leave safely. Keep a list of important phone numbers and documents in case of an emergency.
